5 years of Alma Cafe

A Dream Rooted in Love, Grit, and Community

August 22, 2020 — a date etched into our hearts as the moment we signed the lease to a dream. In the middle of uncertainty, amidst a world on pause, we chose to believe. Alma Café was born from that belief — from a vision stitched together with courage, sacrifice, and an unshakable love for our culture, our food, and the people we serve.

Five years later, we’re still here — thriving, growing, and more in love with what we do than ever before. What began as a single location in the heart of the Bywater neighborhood is now a dual presence in New Orleans, with a second home in Mid-City. Two kitchens. Two communities. One Alma.

The Soul of Alma

“Alma” means soul. And that’s exactly what we’ve poured into every plate, every coffee, every moment. From early mornings prepping baleadas and pouring café de olla, to late-night cleanups and quiet tears in the walk-in, this has never just been a business — it's been a love letter. To our ancestors. To the flavors of Honduras. To every guest who walks through our doors.

We remember the first guests who waited patiently while we found our rhythm. The neighbors who rooted for us. The staff who became family. And those who trusted us with their stories over a cup of coffee or Sunday brunch. You are Alma.

A Celebration of Growth

Growth for us hasn’t just meant expanding locations. It’s been about deepening our roots. We’ve grown in leadership, in creativity, in resilience. We've navigated hurricanes, power outages, global chaos, and our own fears — yet we’ve kept showing up.

The Bywater gave us our foundation. The Mid-City location gave us wings. Together, they carry our mission forward: to serve soulful, honest food that celebrates heritage, hospitality, and hard work.

Join Us in the Celebration

This month, we raise a toast to five years of flavor, family, and faith. And to thank you, we’re offering a special $12 combo meal: one baleada sencilla and an agua fresca of your choice. It's a simple dish with deep roots — just like Alma.

Thank you for believing in us. Thank you for showing up. Here's to the next five years, and beyond.

Con todo el alma,
The Alma Café Family
